What can I do with the NVC for BlackBerry application?

The beta version of the NVC for BlackBerry (NVC-BB) provides four functions activated by voice. These are

  • Make a call
  • Compose or Reply to an SMS Message
  • Compose or Reply to an Email Message
  • Search Web
To trigger any one of these functions, simply press and hold the side speech button (the left side button located in the middle of the device) while speaking a command.

TIPS: While receiving your command, the application displays its mode as LISTENING, and on some phones prompts with a beep. Make sure to release the speech button AFTER you speak a command. You can also launch the application menu from your BlackBerry Menu Screen → Nuance Voice Control. Depending on the specific command, the application will launch another screen (SMS, email, web search) or execute the command directly (for example, by dialing). If there are ambiguities (for example, unclear telephone number input), the application will prompt you to resolve them. - TOP

How do I make a call?

The name dialing command allows you to initiate calls with your voice. You can dial a name in the address book or say a command like "call 781 565 5000". If a contact in the address book has several phone numbers, just specify the desired location. For example, you can say "call John Smith on his mobile".

TIPS: Speech recognition works best if the entries and spoken words match both the first and last name of the contact. If there are ambiguities in the speech recognition result, the system may prompt graphically for you to resolve them. For example, you might see a selection list prompting you to select either 650 245 9669 or 650 245 9661. - TOP

How does sending text work?

Using the send text command invokes the BlackBerry messaging client. After pressing and holding the side speech button, you can say "Send text to [name in address book]" or "Send text to [phone number]", thereby launching the BlackBerry messaging client with the correct addressee already filled in. Once the client is open, simply dictate the message: Press and hold the side speech button and say your message. When satisfied with the result, just press the soft button indicated to send your message. To reply to a text message, open the SMS, click the BlackBerry menu key and choose "Reply SMS with NVC". Then simply press and hold the side speech button and dictate your message.

TIPS: It's better to speak one or two sentences at a time and verify the results rather than dictate a whole paragraph at once. - TOP

How does sending email work?

Using the send email command invokes the BlackBerry email client. After pressing and holding the side speech button, say "Send email to [name in address book]", thereby launching the BlackBerry email client with the correct recipient already filled in. Once the client is open, simply dictate the email: Press and hold the side speech button and say your message. When satisfied with the result, just press the soft button indicated to send your email. To reply to an email, open the email and choose "reply". Then simply press and hold the side speech button and dictate your message.

TIPS: It's better to speak one or two sentences at a time and verify the results rather than dictate a whole paragraph at once. - TOP

How does web search work?

To invoke web search functionality, press and hold the side speech button and use the "search web" command. To the prompt "What are you searching for?", use the press + hold mechanism to issue a spoken query. The system uses dictation technology to recognize the query and will display links to the search results in the phone's web browser.

TIPS: Queries are best phrased in the form of questions; for example "How long is the Golden Gate Bridge?", "How many meters are in a mile?", "What happened to Michael Jackson?". - TOP
